Soča troughs
About the formation of the Soča basin
The River Soča cut relatively quickly into rock barriers on its way and dug troughs and canyons, the most numerous and most characteristic in all Slovenia.
Small Soča troughs (3.8km from the camp):
- Just before the confluence with the tributary Vrsnica, the Soča enters into the 100 m long, up to 6 m deep and at the narrowest point barely 1m wide Small trough.
Great Soča troughs (200m from the camp):
- The Soča is enclosed here in a 750m long and 10 to 15m deep trough, in some places just a little less than 2m wide. The depth depends on the amount of water that changes over the course of the seasons (in the dry season the troughs are filled to a height of about 3 m, at high tide to the edge or even flooded).
Zmuklica (5 km from the camp):
- Below the hamlet of Kršovec on the border of the Triglav National Park are the last, 150 m long troughs, which are only 1.5 m wide at their narrowest point.
