The River Soča cut relatively quickly into rock barriers on its way and dug troughs and canyons, the most numerous and most characteristic in all Slovenia.

  • Just before the confluence with the tributary Vrsnica, the Soča enters into the 100 m long, up to 6 m deep and at the narrowest point barely 1m wide Small trough.
  • The Soča is enclosed here in a 750m long and 10 to 15m deep trough, in some places just a little less than 2m wide. The depth depends on the amount of water that changes over the course of the seasons (in the dry season the troughs are filled to a height of about 3 m, at high tide to the edge or even flooded).
  • Below the hamlet of Kršovec on the border of the Triglav National Park are the last, 150 m long troughs, which are only 1.5 m wide at their narrowest point.
