About the botanical garden
The botanical garden 'Alpinum Juliana' is a protected natural monument and natural value of national importance. Blooming, green gardens on an area of 2572 m² inspire with more than 600 different plant varieties, including endemic plants that grow only in Slovenia. The botanical garden was founded in 1926 by the Trieste landowner and merchant Albert Bois de Chesne, who fulfilled his dreams of cultivating a garden in which all vegetation belts follow each other like in nature. He named it after his wife Juliana.A friend of the mountains and discoverer of the Julian Alps, Dr. Julius Kugy, helped him with advice. The Alpinum Juliana is most beautiful in May and early June, when cowslips and gentians bloom, but also from early spring to late autumn, unique plant species grow that are definitely worth a visit. Since 1962, the garden has been managed by the Natural History Museum of Slovenia. The botanical Garden is open daily from 08:30 to 18:30 from 1 May to 30 September.
